In the current March issue of the New Zealand Journal of Agriculture-Mr A. W. Green, manager of Ruakura State Farm, gives a useful account of 20 years’ experience at‘ the farm in the matter of shelter-belts and hedges, including lists of trees and shrubs which have given satisfactory results or the contrary. Plans and a'schedule of material required tor a standard woolshed under New Zealand conditions are presented by the Agriculture Department’s Wool Instructor, Mr J, G. Cook. Dr E. W. Hilgcndorf contributes the history of an improved strain of Algerian oats recently produced at Canterbury Agricultural College (Lincoln), and which has been named “College Algerians ’. Mr B. C. Aston continues his series on the Poisonous and Medicinal Plants of New Zealand. An article by Mr L. Birks, Chief Electrical Engineer of the Public Works Departmen on the Development and Future of Electric Milking -in New Zealand, gives the latest information and statistics regarding the use* of electric powoi for operating milking machine plants. In a paper on the Slaughtering of Stock Major W. C. Quinnell • discusses the question as to which is the most humane of the various methods and advances a definite opinion. Other matter includes articles on Cow-testmg Association Work; the Tomato-caterpillar Moth; the Top-dressing of Fiorin Grass Land; and Vine Culture under Glass. Regular monthly features complete the issue.
