THE TELEPHONE IN NELSON DISTRICT

TAKAKA AND MOTUEKA LEAD

THE WAY

It is in the interests of tho district that every farmer and - settler be connected up with the telephone, and every movement that tends in the direction of popularising the telephone is worthy of commendation. While it is difficult, if not impossible, to obtain absolute accuracy _in the figures, it is possible . to obtain certain reliable data, and from this it is seen that Takaka leads the way in the Nelson district in the proportion of population per telephone, reaching the very fine figure of one telephone for every 7.2 of the population. Motueka comes a very close second with one_ telephone for every 7.7 of the population. _ ihe figures are approximately for a six-mile radius from each exchange. "

These are very fine averages, considering the figure for the whole Dominion is one telephone for every 13 inhabitants, and the Dominion is among the first three countries in the \ world ,so far as the . popularity of the telephone is concerned. It is interesting to note that in Nelson there is one telephone for every 10.2 of the population; taking ofi course the six-mile radius from the exchange mentioned above.
