EMIGRATION OF EX-SERVICE MEN

j . STATEMENT BY LORD HAIG (By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Australian & N.Z. Cable Association.) I LONDON, Doc 1. Lord Haig, speaking at .Manchester, said lie bad received a telegram from a dominion Governor, asking for £IOOO to help ex-soldiers who had emigrated. He was not going to advise emigration until he knew that things were right. “1‘ want to hear ofc letters coming to our people i from onr colonics saying there is plenty of work; yon will he all right if you | come to us. I have letters from places i like Queensland and from some oilier dominions, stating that many of our gallant men who have gone out there, arc j starving. I am not going to be so nnj friendly to our unemployed ex-soldiers I here as to advise them to emigrate until I know things are all right. I am not going to toll them to leave here until the dominions set their houses in order.” Sir J. Cook, interviewed said that this was the most serious and most damaging attack yet made on the migration arrangements, especially in view of the speaker’s authority. Sir J. Cook quoted returns showing that in the last- quarter this year over 4250 ex-servicemen had gone or were going to Australia, all requisitioned by various Governments, who undertake to placcf them, and a large proportion nominated by Australians who arc responsible for their.j welfare. j
