Malodorous fumes from tlieir ealifont prevented a Timavu liouseJiold from enjoying the delights of a hut bath for some weeks. Every time the gas under the' ealifont was lighted the most sickening stench was created, and the (lame refused to burn up and heat the water. Inspection of the apparatus brought fourth the elucidation, until one day the gasman had a look at the vent used to carry away tin; fumes, and there he found a cheerful family of sparrows in a. snug little nest, completely blocking the means provided for the escape of the fumes. With the dismissal of the bird family from their almost volcanic, homo the fumes found their way outside, instead of poisoning the atmosphere and interfering with the sanitary arrangements of the distressed household.— Timaru Post.
