“PEOPLE’S” DAY VERY LARGE ATTENDANCE interesting COMPETITIONS Hast year the A. and H. Association s show was held under adverse weather conditions; but. this year warm sunny day’s were experienced and the attendance in consequence, especially yesterday. was very large. It is estimated that over 5000 people were present ; over 3000 paid tor admission, while | 2000 members’ and other tickets were issued. '1 lie 10.30 and 1.30 trains from town took out sveral hundreds, while the down (rains were also "adl patronised. .Motor ears, as usual, brought their hundreds, and vehicles were, parked several deep right down the main entrance, while scores ot others were lined up opposite the grand stand. There was plenty m interest; the crowd ; many of those present were interested in’ the exhibits: while others again. especially the young people, found plenty of amusement at the numerous, side shows, which. by_ lie way. appeared to do thriving business. During the afternoon her Excellency. Viscoum ;ss dellicoe was present, received a very warn welcome from the large crowd. As usual, the light horse competitions created great- interest: while the parade < f prize slack, which was delayed for some time in order that Lady Jellicne should witness it, excited much admiration. In the opinion of the judge (Air Dollar! the light horses were far and away above the average, half-a-dozen or .so being quite (it to compete with any tiling in the Dominion. The pony class was particularly good. The driving competition was the. best, the judge had seen in New Zealand, special mention being made of the tandem class. There was keen competition in the lady rider section, and was staled by the judge to be a splendid class, and as good as could be seen at the Christchurch Show. All the competitors were good, and great difficulty was experienced in awarding the tickets 1 . The Stanley Berryman Memorial Cup for the best hack' on the ground was won again by Mr T. Newman's Hrimiy. The Marlborough competitors, the .Misses Gouller and Miss Smith carried off quite a number of prizes, especially (lie former, and were warmly congratulated on their success. Unfortunately the lasi few events were not got off in time for the majority of spectators to witness them, and per haps it might lie advise file in future years to bring these events off earlier in the afternoon, as they are the chief attract ion of the day. The Nelson Silver Band played several selections during the day. The Show officials are to he congratulated on the success achieved. The secretary (Mr W. D. Darkness) and his assistants had a particularly busy time, and the smooth working of the show is a tribute to the efficiency of the work done. The judge of the light horse section commented on the efficient way the class stewards carried nut their duties. Altogether, this year's show will add another success to the long list of previous functions. Following is the concluding portion of the During the afternoon the well-known trotting stallion Hardy Wilkes, a firstprize ‘taker. was given a fry-out by his owner (Mr E, F. Hoaly).
