CHRISTCHURCH. This Day

Samuel Holland, aged 23, engine driver, of Ashburton, pleaded not guilty to a manslaughter charge concerning the death of James Gill, at Ashburton on August 26. Dr Mullins gave evidence that death was due to cerebral hemorrhaege, the result of violence. , Cross-examined lie said the internal organs showed signs of congestion and chronic alcoholism. The heart valves were probably degenerated. T. W. Hart, licensee of the Chertsey Hotel, said he heard a man, believed to her Gill, say “Three cheers for the man who shot Michael Collins.” He separated Gill and Holland. Gill,appeared to he the aggressor. J. W. Tonics said he separated the men at Chertsey. Gill was fightablc. A. D. Thompson, doorkeeper at the Ashburton dance hall, said lie did not Hi ink Gil! saw Holland before he was struck.
