MR H. ATMORE'S CANDIDATURE

Mr Atmore speaks at Brook Street to-morrow (Tuesday); Hira (Happy Valley), Schoolroom on Wednesday; Ranzau School on Thursday, and, in the Richmond Hall on Friday evening. Mr Atmore notifies that the committee rooms will be open nightly from Monday next.

MR A. GILBERT'S CANDIDATURE

Mr A. Gilbert, Reform candidate for Nelson, visited Happy Valley on Saturday, addressing a meeting in the schoolroom at 8 p.m.. There was a large atlendance.

The chairman, 'Mr E. G. Westley, in introducing Mr Gilbert said he had known him at Greymouth prior to coming to Nelson, as a really live man in that town, both in business and in the general politics and public affairs, doing his part efficiently and successfully. As a Nelson resident lie paid a tribute to Mv Gilbert as a really live man in connection with the Chamber of Commerce, •and in many other activities for the good of the" people of the district in every way. Mr Gilbert thanked the chairman for his kind introduction, saying that he had always tried to do his duty towards his fellow citizens. He placed befpre his hearers the alternative claims of the three parties, i.e. Reform, Liberal and Labour, clearly stating the- aims and platform of each, showing conclusively that he stood for the Reform party be-, cause the platform. and aims of that < party are worthy of the support of all citizens who to-day wish New Zealand to prosper in every way. In the course of a well thought out and prepared speech, the candidate dealt with the following items specially:—Progress of wage earners, opoprtunifies, ■ Civil■ Sep vice pay and bonus cut, increase in pension for old age pensioners, widows, soldiers, epidemic victims, etc., etc, showing the great liberality of the Government's action in eyery case; housing, showing the splendid" work the Government has done in providing to meet shortage; advances to farmers and workers; big estate and increased taxation thereon; trade, both local and overseas; public debt; taxation; and referring to the strike now on, lie was very sanguine that the Prime Muuster will again rise to the occasion and deal with it as efficiently as he has with many other difficulties he has met and faced during his term of .office, with courage and success. Mr;; Gilbert throughout showed he. was well versed > in the questions he dealt with aijd_iwas frequently applauded.
