"SOCCER ” AN OFFER TO YORKSHIREMEN:
(To the Editor)
Si.-,—lt will be very interesting mews to the many followers of Association (Soccer) Football in Nelson to learn, that in the semi-final for the English Cup held a fortnight ago, Preston North End defeated Tottenham by two goals to one, whilst Huddersfield beat Notts County by 3 to 1. Thus for the final at Crystal Palace, next or the followins Saturday, Preston play Huddersfield. It is just twenty years this September •Prestoin Guild) since I last saw Preston, play, vet I believe I have followed almost every match since and as a keen supporter of “Proud Preston I Will make a sporting offer to any Yorkjhireman (preferably from Huddersfield) to tho following effect. Should, Preston win the English Cup this month, I will donate to the local soccer association a cup value not less, than four guineas to ■be competed for on the lines of the English Association Cup. Should Huddersfield win—and I don t behev they will-then he shall donate a cup same value. Those who have mot seen important matches played at Home can have no idea how attractive and thralling “soccer” football can be. spectators witnessed the 32 matches in the first round of the English-Cup -tie on January 7th of this year, whilst the eight matches in the third round on *ebruarv 18th were attended by do I,AM spectators, the gate receipts being £25 506, an average of over £3OOO pet match. I believe a cup competed tor locally on the lines of the English Cud, will be beneficial to local soccer and lielp to create in Nelson more public interest in what is admitted to be the most popular game in the world. Personally .1 hope Preston North End will win the English Cup during the next fortnight, 1 a feat they have not accomplished since 1889. If they are successful I shall be most happf to make good the above offer. Have we a sporting Yorkshireman amongst us. so that a cup will be assured to the-local soccer association. Thanking you for space, I .am etc. g y .. p g om) pbeston.”
