ENGINEERS’ DISPUTE

I BREAKAWAY OF UNIONS (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association). LONDON, April 5. The breakaway by other unions from the engineers is regarded as almost equally important to the breaking up of the Triple Alliance. Labour circles condemn tho coalition of the Amalgamated Engineers, which they attribute to Mr Lloyd George's manoeuvres. Skilled engineers fear that when work is resumed semi-skilled men from other unions will displace skilled enginecis, making the ultimate reinstatement of amalgamated men very difficult. Dr. Macnamara announced in the House of Commons that negotiations between tho employers and oilier unions would commence, on April 10th, the lockout meanwhile being suspended. He did not think a court of inquiry would bo justified iu view of tluf resumption of negotiations, the accepted basis for which implied tho management’s right give instructions pending negotiations, except where modifications were mutually agreed upon. Mr Hill, secretary ot the boilermakers, advised the members of muons which agreed to negotiate and not cease work, pointing out that the decisions readied in the negotiations would be submitted to a ballot of all the affiliated trades. .
