MANGAHAO TUNNELS
(United Press Association.)
WELLINGTON, This Day
Contracts have been let for the completion of Mangahao tunnels. Six parties of tunnellers have taken separate emit rads, and an interesting feature of Die arrangements is that the average price per foot to bo paid by the Public Works Department is less than tho price that would have been paid under tho old co-operative contracts which were cancelled when the miners ceased work some time ago. Several of the parlies are already at work, and others are about to commence. An exact comparison of prices is difficult owing to Die variation of conditions. In the case of No. 2 contract, the previous juice was 62/- a foot plus 5/- for timbering. The new contract price is 54/a foot plus 5 1- for timbering. Tho men may make better money than they did under the old arrangement if they increase their pace, but tho department is saving money on the change in system.
