SITE OF THE POWER HOUSE

RESIDENTS’ PROTEST At yeslerdav’s meeting of the Nelson Harbour Board a letter was received from the Town Cleric suggesting that tiie site of the power house in connection with the. electric light scheme he opposite Victoria Road. If this site was not approved by the Board the Board was asked to suggest one. A petition was received loom residents of Victoria Road and vicinity against the power station Being erected where proposed, on account of the smoke and noise nuisance that would be caused. The Board consulted Captain Collins,, harbourmaster, who said there was no suitable site nearer the wharves, but one could be secured nearer the Rocks. The chairman remarked that there would be objection wherever the powei station was erected. During discussion the suitableness ot Ha a la. shore Island was introduced, it being suggested that water pipes could he laid across the harbour as was done on a former occasion, and that a swing bridge could be constructed from the foreshore to the island, near the old entrance It was resolved, on the motion of Air Snodgrass, seconded by Mr Washhoui 11 (hat the Council he informed the Board could not agree to the site proposed, Suit, would consider other proposed sites.
