ORCHARD CHEMIST.
APPOINTED BY CAWTHRON ' INSTITUTE '
FRUITGROWERS CONTRIBUTE TOWARDS SALARY
Tho Nelson Provincial Fruitgrowers , Council at their last meeting decided to contribute £IOO a year towards the salary of an orchard chemist, the Cawtlirou Institute to provide £l5O per annum. Tho Trustees of the .Institute have accordingly appointed Mr Norman,McClelland, a research student at Victoria College, Wellington, to the post. ■ ■ The work to be undertaken wilt be of various kinds. First of all there aro many questions with regard to tho bes composition and methods of preparation of orchard sprays .which need to bo investigated. A second point jb as to whether any. connection can ho traced between tho composition of tho sod and the colour of apples. A third is as To whether the keeping qualities of apples aro directly connected with their chemical composition. , c ■ A number of other investigations ha\ c been suggested, but if those mentioned are efficiently carried out, tho liuitwill, we arc sure,, icccivo congi-aitulations from every part oi tho Dominion. ■.
