COUNTY COUNCIL MATTERS
(To the Editor.) Sir,—As your report of the recent meeting, of’the Waimea County Council seems to show that seven out of the nine Members consider one quarter of the amount of the General Rato too much to expend on the by-roads of this county, I bespeak your usual courtesy to draw Pie attention of ratepayers to sections 120 and 121 of the Counties Act 1920, which obviously mean that the legislature intended that half of the General "ates may he allocated or levied for the construction and maintenance of the byroads, in order to encourage back-blocks settlement and help tiiosc pioneers, who deserve more consideration in their hardships and worthy efforts, to develop the country. lam etc. H. G. BERRYMAN.
