HIGH COMMISSIONER’S REPORT

The Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram, dated 21st May. from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, London:' — “Meat.—No, material .change in mar. ket. Owing to fullness of stores and slow discharge of steamers,., only 'moderate quantity of New Zealand meat available. Followiig are quotations (15th May given in parentheses)-21st May New Zealand mutton, wethers,, new season, 8d to 9d (8d to 9d); New Zealand mutton, wethers from America, 61 to Bcl ;New Zealand mutton, ewes, 7£d -to 8d (7-2-d); New Zealand lamb, good demand, Is 2J,d to Is 3d (Is Id to Is 2£d); New Zealand lamb, from America, Is Id “Forward buyers cautious, owing to stocks held by Government. “Beef, chilled, fores 5d (4ld), hinds 9'd (10d); New Zealand beef, ox, firstclass quality, fores 4d, hinds fid to 7d; difficult to sell. New Zealand beef, cow no demand; sale has been made as low as 3£d per lb for sides. “Retail meat prices are as follow : Mutton, English, legs. 2s 7d, loins 3s, shoulders 2s 5d per lb; imported, legs Is sd, loins Is 4d, shoulders Is 2J*d per lb. Lamb, English, legs 2s lOd* loins 3s 3d, shoulders 2s 8d; imported, legs Is 9d, loins Is Bd, shoulders la Bd. Beef English, sirloin 2s 4d, ribs 2ti 3d, steak 3s 4d per lb; imported, sirloin Is 4d, ribs 1$ 4d, steak 2s per lb. The above quotations are not exclusively for New Zealand meat, but in some cases apply to all imported meat. . , c“Butter.—Good inquiry for finest quality.
