COUNTY COUNCIL MEETING The monthly meeting of the Murchison County Council was held on Saturday, the Bth. Present: Crs. Monahan (Chairman), Thomson, Beilby and Badcock. Ors. Newman, Stewart and Thomason apologised for their absence. , The Overseer’s report was read and adopted. Arising therefrom it was resolved that the Chairman’s action in lotting contract on Baigent’s Road for £2OO to D. Whitford be confirmed. Mr T. Robinson wrote asking for exemption of rates whilst on active Service. The Clerk _ stated that the amount involved with £8 5s 6d.— Granted. The Owen Valley Settlers’ League wrote re road grants. —Resolved that the Clerk and Overseer attend to these matters. The Owen Brandi of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union wrote re Dryden’s and Irwin’s Roads. —The Clerk to attend to this also and write to the Public Works Department. The Crown Lands Department wrote that £lO had been voted for eradication of noxious weeds.—Cr. Beilby explained that this was the outcome'of a telegram sent to the Commissioner by the Matakitaki Progress League.— It was resolved that some of this j money bo spent from HcWha’s to Sullivan’s Bridge, and from, Beuke’s Millers and the Coal Reserve River frontage. —The Overseer to gttend to this matter as urgent. The District Health Officer wrote re sanitary inspector, etc. —Cr. Badcock moved that the sum asked for, viz., £2l per annum, be paid into the Consolidated Fund. —Seconded by Cr. Thomson and carried. Cr. Beilby moved that this Council write advising the Commissioner of Crown Lands that in the-.opinion of this Council the reasop that so few applications were received for the Tutakl station and none for Walker’s Station is that the valuation of these lands is too high, and that the SoL, diers’ Land Purchase Board he asked to consider the advisability of having these properties, re-valued by a valuer with local knowledge of the district, and that the land be again offered at the new valuation, and if no applanations are received from returned >'pldiers within three months after again being offered at the new valuation, that the-sections be then available to the general public; and also that access to these lands is not as good as it should be, owing to the fact i hat through loss of revenue since they i were acquired by the Crown, the Council is unable to maintain the
