ANOTHER ADVANCE IN IT!ICE (By Telegraph.—Special to Mail.) , CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 1. Smokers will have to pay more for their tobaccos and cigarettes from early next .week. The wholesale rates have been suddenly" advanced to retailers from 7d to 2/1 a lb, plug tobacco being mainly affected. The retailors have not yet laid tho opportunity to readjust their new scales,, but an estimate given to-day by various Christchurch tobacconists was that the increase would range to about 20 per cent. Practically all ol the more readily saleable brands arc controlled by the British Tobacco Coy, a,iid it is these brands that arc affected bv the new price .list. Retailors do not know why the increased rates are asked, apart from the published reason that the cost of # production has gone up. Many retailors suggest that tho matter is one for inquiry hy the Board of Trade. Retailers declare that past increases have affected sales, as custoiqers are increasingly resentful at having to pay more, and the latest increase is expected to encourage greater economy and even total abstinence whore smoking is concerned.
