FORTNIGHTLY MEETING The fortnightly meeting of the Nelson City Council was held last evening, Present: Crs. J. A. Stringer, W. Surrell, W. C. Harley, T. S.. Edwards, J. W. Harris, F. Pin in, H. From Mr J. D. Moriarty, agreeing to Council’s terms for sale of land. I —.Referred to City Engineer and City solicitors. From Mr Jos. Taylor, offering to sell J laud in Poor Man’s Valley for recrea- . tion purposes.—Referred to Commit* i tee. From the Prime Minister, in reply to the Council’s resolution, stating that ho was of opinion that the provisions of tho Land and Income’.Tax Amendment Bill would have tho effect of facilitating the borrowing operations of local authorities, as the maximum tax imposed under the Bill would bo 2s 6d in the £ as against the present maximum of 7a 6d. The liability of debenture-hold-ers whoso rate of tax is under 2s 6d would not be altered, j From secretary U.A.0.D., applying for use of Botanical Reserve on Ist January, 1921, for a gala day.—Granted. From Mr S. B. Hodges, requesting gravelling of llutcbcson-streeb (an attached memo, 'by the City Engineer said he could bud no record of the road being taken over by . the Council). — Town Clerk to report. From Mr H. Hunter-Brown, protesting against the further removal of soil from river bank at Nilo-street East ford. (A memo, by the City Engineer stated that there was no danger to the j writer’s property).—A reply to bo sent ' in accordance with tho Engineer’s memo. From Mr \V. G. Franco, asking for line of strict in Hardy-street upon which to erect a fence.—-Referred to Engineer. From Mr F. Jones (abattoir employee), applying for three weeks’ holiday.—Resolved that the holiday be granted, and in consideration of. Mr Jones’s long service (over 20 years), lie receive full pay for the whole period of his absence. A letter from the manager of the Abattoir, adversely commenting on the application, was read after the Council decided to grant the three weeks asked for. Cr. Harley had recorded on the minutes Ids dissent from the action of tho Council in granting the holiday before hearing the manager’s letter. From Mr J H. The City Engineer (Mr J. 0 .Littlejohn) reported:— Streets and Footways The asphalting of the paths in Collingwood-strcot and Bridge-street-is completed. 'the work on -Mount-street is in progress, the expenditure to (late, being a'oont tOO. An epidemic of strangles has broken out amongst, the horses, disor- | ganising the work temporarily. ‘ Drainage :—-The sewers are reported to bo all clear, and the system is running as usual. Places of Public Recreation :— A sale l»y auction of the firewood on Botanical Reserve was held as directed. Some of the wood sucked on the flat, realised ‘ids Gd. The thinning out,of the trees . is still in progress.—The swings tor Lianby Park and the Old Cemetery are ready to be erected, and this will be done a* soon as the fencing at the stables is completed. Miscellaneous: bpurteen building permits for.avorks valued at Fl-RR i have been issued.

THE c; AS WORKS. The Gaswoiks report showed that during September 363 ions ol coal were < ai Itoirsecl ; gas manufactured, 4,638,000 cubic foot; pas per ton, 12,776 cubic foot. The value of residuals sold during the month was £370. The Engineer reported that it had been necessary to run on North Cape Coal for about a fortnight, which had somewhat affected the make and quality of the gas. A shipment of State coal came to hand on Monday, sufficient to last till the end of the month. REPORT OF SANITARY INSPECTOR. The. Sanitary Inspector (Mr M. Uus- . bridge) reported that 2-11 householders were on the rubbish service. forty house inspections had been made, ana various notices served. Notices served on certain property owners to have premises connected with the sower had not been complied with.—(lt was resolved that this matter he considered by the Committee). ABATTOIR REPORT. The Abattoir manager (Mr C. W. Mitchell) reported that, the stock slaughtered during the fortnight comprised 64 cattle. 12 calves. 724 sheep, 41 lambs, 20 pigs; total, 861. During the period four sheep wore condemned. MAYOR’S HONORARIUM. f Cr. Edwards intimated that later on he intended to move that the Mayor’s honorarium he at least £2OO. He would do this because he considered the Mayoral chair should _ pass round, and under present conditions a working man could not afford to seek the position. He was not speaking for him<mlf as he.did not aspire to the position. Manv a working man, he declared, could fill the chair with credit. Various small matters wore dealt with, and the Council rose at 9.20 p.m. ft
