Nelson Evening Mail SATURDAY, AUGUST 21, 1920. NELSON BOOKLET PROJECT

AN important matter to be considered by tho Local Bodies’ Conference on Alon'day next is tho publication of another Nelson booklet on tho linos of Sunny Nelson, issued a few years ago by the Nelson Advancement So-

ciety. Alembers have ample evidence that the publication has done an immense amount of work for city and district, and they are in a position to confidently recommend the issue of another booklet on similar lines. It is felt by the Advancement Society that its cardinal endeavour at this juncture should be district unity, and the first step in honestly carrying out that policy is to unite with the Chamber of Commerce. A recent meeting held iu connection with the Central Progress League is also to be

asked to join forces with tho Chamber. This Will not mar progress. It will further it by avoiding multiplicity of small associations with practically the same objectives. The matters have not been formally discussed by any of the bodies concerned, but in advocating district unity it is only right to explain that the city organisations are preparing to join forces and work as one strong body. Especially is this unity essential in the production of a booklet worthy of the resources and potentialities of tho province. In the issuing of Sunny Nelson the Chamber of Commerce assisted wdth a substantial donation, as did also the City Council and various fruit enthusiasts. A good-spirit and partial unity made the production possible. On tho present occasion, if complete district unity can be achiov«ecl, there will be no need to fear the result. To the production of Sunny Nelson the country local bodies con-| tributed practically nothing. There is distinct and definite community of interest in all parts of the district from Collingwood to Alurchison and on towards Havelock in the other direction. It is little Lise asking tourists to come to Nelson only to visit the Alaitai, the Reservoir or even Tahuna, fine as these, places are. The programme is incomplete and absurd, if it docs not include a tour through the district, tho orchards of Btokc, tho trees and, hedges of Waimea West, the Aloutero Hills, tho extensive orchard areas, j Alotueka, Riwaka, the Takaka Hills,!

the geological wonders of the Golden Bay districts, the Bnller Valley and Alurchison, just io mention a few places.

But fundamentally, ami from a true economic basis, the best advancement for any city and district is one which conies from the sound growth of urban and rural industries—ami tin's promotion work is tho best possible part of any progress movement. It is well to make adequate reference to the varied grandeur, of the scenic features by land and sea, the beauty of [gardens, imported trees and native

forest, the genial climate, the educational facilities, and oilier amenities

which make life pleasant, bnfc the main reference must be to the resources and potentialities of the district. The country and the Unite can flourish together on mutually helpful lines of sound and solid expansion. L the conference can initiate, a district movement to bring out such a booklet, supplemented by an illustrated “folder” for distribution to Tourist Offices, etc., and a concise local guide for travellers when they arrive in Nelson, it will have created an opportunity for a- spirited forward move fur the making of a Greater Nelson (City and Province).
