SAT V EDAV ’S MATCHES
Despite the heavy vain on Saturday, ail the matches, except third-class, set down woi'o played. .Naturaliy the attendance was somewhat meagre, but tiio.se who braved the elements were rewarded in that tire senior fixture, Aeiao.u v. Waimea, was probably one of the best games of the. season. The ground in front on the pavilion held two or three large pools of water, and were veritable magnets, the greater part of the play taking place just in these sect spots, incidentally providing cumsulerable amusement for toe warm, dry spectator under cover. Of the game, the Nelson team had probably toe, best of it, but like* Etc senior oiji no pa.vupl nsxofj P|O r ' nos i' , X ‘d ; >q.mn previous Saturday _ would have been more satisfactory iiad t-h© score been oven. From the kick off Nelson forwards attacked strongly, and had Waimea on the defensive, Croucher (Wainiea full-back) cl oaring his line brilliantly on more than one occasion. Waimea' forw'ards, putting plenty of sting into the game, wore instrumental in transferring play to Nelson home territory, when Papps, from a- penalty, .placed a good goal. Waimea 3, Nelson 0. The Nelson backs, headed by •Smith, got 'some fair passing movements going, carrying play into Waimea twenty-five,- where- Smith marked nicely; Read converting, thus evening up the score. Nelson pressed hard and again saw Smith very nearly over. From a. passing rush, the ball going right through the hands of the Waimea, three-quarter line, a sure try was thrown away by the wing three-quar-ter mulling his mass. The Nelson forwards again carried the game into ■Wainiea twenty-five, when Read missed j). verv easy chance. x.o notch another three*'nointe. At half-time Cannington (Ntolson) retired, having injured bis lei* early in the game. Coleman, of Waimea, also retired, his place being filled by’CTiallies, ' . 'Commencing the second spell both teams hustled play, and notwithstanding tho greasv nature of the ground and the ball, the kicking and handling of the ball was extremely •accurate. From a penalty Papps made a good but unsuccessful attempt at goal, the tail iust passing under the bar. Hay was up- and down the held, and very even, until just on call of time, when from a penalty Papps (Waimea) converted with a splendid kick. Waimea 6 Nelson 3. The game ended with Nelson striving to cross the Waimea s line and would undoubtedly have done so but for the magnificent fielding ana kicking of Croucher at full-back, hox the winners, Croucher was most conspicuous. and was responsive to a great extent for Waimea s win. Papps pkived a sound game throughout, fus place-kicking and line-kicking _ being excellent. "'Of the forwards,, it would be difficult to single out any one individual player; all played well. J?or Nelson, Smith played a fine’game, and had bad hick more than once Read plaved a steady game. All the forwards played well, and worked well together. Mr. Batchelor refereed.
