About 7 o’clock Saturday evening, Edward King, assistant clerk of the Magistrate’s Court, lost his life through accidentally stepping in the dark into a hot hole in the native reserve at Whakarewarewa. He was visiting Alaori friends, and had just gone a short distance after leaving their house when lie disappeared from view. A Alaori who saw the occurrence gave the alarm, but nothing was seen in the hole, which'is about 33 feet deep, with boiling water ten or twelve feet below' ground. The Alaoris worked strenuously to recover the body* They communicated with the_ police and Constables Johnson and Neil went to the scene with ropes and grappling iron, and about ten o’clock file body was recovered.
