ANNUAL CONFERENCE

(United Press Association.) DUNEDIN, Jan. 12. The annual conference of the. Executive Council of iho New Zealand Railway Officers’ . Institute wag commenced today, the president, Mr J. young, in the- dhair. L. • Hellor, traffic manager, Greyrnouth, who was a member of the first executive council of the institute. Mr W. 0. Ennis, vice president, and Mr R. C. Morgan, secretary, were heartily welcomed back after their military service abroad. The chairman touched briefly on the. increased cost of living, which had pressed so heavily on the members of the institute, in common with the general public, and pointed out that the great increases whidh had taken place in recent years were undoubtedly due to the large quantity 0 f paper money in circulation. This, he said, applied through " out the whole world. The council then proceeded to consider the agenda, paper, whidh was a lengthy document., comprising'no fewer than 113 remits. It decided to support a request from the Superannuated Railwaymen’s. Association for -assistance in the way of a bonus. A long discussion took place on the anomalies appearing in the 1919 classification list, and considerable dissatisfaction was expressed by delegates from all branches at the unfair treatment which officers Jhad received. especially officers of long service.
