HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING The following business was taianstected at yesterday’s monthly meeting of Hospital and 'Charitable Aid' Board after we went to press:— RESIDENT SURGEON’S REPORT. The Resident Surgeon (Dr Jamieson) reported that during the month 77 patients had been admitted rind S6 discharged, leaving 76 in the institution. Fourteen diphtheria patients had l been admitted. Several requsitionw busked fcr by the ' Surgeon were granted. HEALTH INSPECTOR. The Health Inspector (Mr IL Coltman) reported that during _ the month the following cases of infectious d’sease had been notified: Nelson City» 15 rases , Richmond borough, 1 case diphtheria ; Moftucka borough, 2 cases diphtheria; Waimea County, diphtheria cases from Stoke, Wakatn, and Tataxairai, and three pneumonic cases Takaka County, two cases diphtheria, two of' lethargic encephalitis; oaie of puea-; Mania, and on© of measles; one of the encephalitis cases had been discharged from hospital; and the other one be; ng treated at homo vtae making steady progress, Colling wood County: One case of scarlet fevCr, Murchison County: One fatal case of diphtheria. Under Hie Sale •' of Food andk Drugs Act samples of breed ; had been purchased, all of which complied with the regulations. Sevteal cases of confectionery were se.zei and aestroyed, and one sample f coffee bad been forwarded for analyns, OLD PEOPLE’S HOME SITE. Some time ago the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board wrote to the City Council suggesting that that body should purchase at a reasonable price the site of the Old People’s Homo m Waimea Road for the purpose of turning it into ‘a recreation ground- A sub-committee Was set up, and at 'today’s meeting of the Board the com* ; mittec (the Mayor and Crs. Stringer, Marris and the Town ClCi’k) waited ; on the Board in reference to" the'matter. The Mayor said the. Council had favourably Considered the matter; but would like to know what price the Board wanted for the site. The committee considered that l it would be a “reasonable price” if the Intid was , ■given the * Council for a recreation j ground. He pointed out that Country - people largely used recreation grounds ; in the city.—Or. Mariis said that in ( these days* of high speed vehicles it j was- necessary to provide playgrounds for children, especially in the vicinity of main roads.—The Chairman pointed out, that the Board had no power to sell the land. The Board, however, ■would . consider th e matter very carefully.—Mrs Watson said recreation grounds were an urgent necessity in thickly populated portions of the city, and she was greatly in favour of the proposal. On the motion of Mr Page, seconded by Mr Win, it "’as resolved that tenders be called for the property.'

Board would maintain and administer the hospital; or. if not, bear annual cost of running suen an institution.—lt was rtesolved that the Board could not entertain the maintenance and administration of the .proposed hospital, but that, if the local authorities availed them selves of the Department’s scheme, the Board would be prepared to make a rebate on the amounts of contributions to the General Hospital. From the Inspector-General of Hospitals, offering to lend the Board a motor ambulance on certain conditions. It was anticipated that the “ambulances would arrive in New Zealand in November next,—lt was resolved that the department bo thanked for its offer and that the matter of acceptance be left in,the hands of the chairman and the clerk. 1 From Dr Makgill, Acting-Inspector General of Hospitals, suggesting that the proposed conference of boards be held over for six or nine months until the return of Dr Valintine who during his absence from New Zealand would specially study hospital matters in the centres he visits.—lt was reolvod that the suggestion be approved. From the Acting-Chief Health Officer, re employment of trained nurses rifl anaesthetists.-—lt was resolved to reply that the Board had experienced no d>fficuly in obtaining medical men to administer anaesthetics. m t From the secretary, Thames Hospital Board, asking tile ’Board to endorse a resolution to the effect that the Prime Minister ho urged, to make suitable arrangements for coal supplies tor all hospitals in the Dominion.—lt was re ‘ solvcd to endorse the resolution.

GENERAL,

It was resolved that painting required at the Hospital be done by day labour. ~ i + Mr Mauoy reported re medical attendance on a family at Motueka nn receipt of charitable aid, and the arrangement .suggested was approved. It was resolved 1 that the clerk bo granted a bonus of £lO . for extra clerical work during the influenza epidemic.
