DEPUTATION TO THE PRIME MINISTER. VOTE OF £3,000,000 ASKED FOR. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) ' WELLINGTON, This Day. • A'* Truest for an educational grant of £3.000,000 was made to the Prime Minister by a deputation from tbs conference ef School Committees’ Association th ; a morning. Speakers for the deputation said the conference had felt that a grant of at least £5,000,000 should lie made for education 'bis Tear, but to bo on the safe side were making for only £3,000.000. Ibe education of a child from kindergarten to University, they asked, should be en tirely free in the sense fhaf the State should conscript the child during the educational years. The deputation, deplored the state of some of riie primary ■chool buildings, and said that at Pa' merston North, for instance, there were school* in which they would hes ; |a?« to house even animals'. In reply, the Prime Minister said he had tremendous sympathy for school committees, for they were doing great, work Adi thou: receiving much recognition. He agreed that more funds should, be made available for building purposes, but what increase would be made he could not say; bu* he could assure them that a bigger vote Would be given. It was not cr* ditable to the country that s 0 many teachers wer € receiving even leas than labourers* wages, and that state of affairs should be changed. Short as the session was likely to be, he hoped that legislation to deal with educational matters would be introduced. They could rest assured that nothing it was possible for him as head of the Gov eminent to do would be left undone
