Archer, at a nice Lug of the Council of the Churches to-night when the business was the discussing of a motion that a committee should enquire into an<l report, on the treatment of prisoners in gaols in New Zealand. Mr R. D. Martin, -he mover of the motion, said the churches had let this matter pass unheeded in the past, but the present treatment in gaols was a relic of savagery. He gave many detail)#. IMF A. L. The Rev. Mr. Archer declared that th e Napier Gaol wa* a disgrace to rivh usation. What he saw in that e rol—mid he had often visited) it—was positively abominable. The mo-ion wv? carried, Mr Levan dissenting and remarking that he believed that what Mr .Martin had said was a tissue of exaggerations.
