MEMORIAL HIGHWAY
AUCKLAND TO) BLUFF,
I .SUGGESTION TO TOWNPLANNERS. Support for the proposal that a national .highway should be constructed, from Auckland to the Bluff us a war memorial, is voiced in a paper read before the Dominion Town-P'lhnning Conference by Messrs S, A. R. Mail* and N. Croftpn Staveley, civil engineers, says the Pest. So much ha® been spent on the war, they said, that the Dominion can ill afford to expend its resources upon anything in tho way of am unproductive memorial to*the soldiers. “Nations of antiquity have, as a rule, marked their era of prosperity by road building, and history record** many noble works gf this nature, both .in the old and new worlds,” stated the paper. “Conquest was. no doubt, in some oases the motive, while utility and civilisation also .provoked the necessary huge expenditure of labour, on such works, and many remains of ancient highways are yet a standing memorial to the greatness of their time. Such a project m this Dominion must appeal to town- : planners. Admittedly such a highway is a bold and costly scheme, but it is not extravagant, as the resources and natural beauties of this Britain l of the South deserve, and would handsomely repay, such a development from an economic standpoint,” I f The puper their dealt with the project : much oth the lines of former proposals, and estimated the total distance at approximately 1200 nv'les, and the cost at about £6,000,000, of which, it wias suggested, £1,000,000 a year could be appropriated, '
