LICENSING POLL

I THURSj DAY. { The poll on the liquor question will : be taken on Thursday next, and the booths will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. The polling places will be those used at general elections, with the addition, in the city, of the Council Chambers. ■ The principal polling booth will be j at the Courthouse. j There will be a compulsory half-holi-day for shops', the closing hour being noon.

Hotels will also be compulsory closed from noon. Deputy returning officers have been instructed to use the utmost despatch in getting the results of the respective booths to the Returning Officer, in order that the public may have the information at the earliest possible moment. Mr Fitz-Gerald (Returning Officer) 'expects to make the first announcement j probably before 7.30 p.m. I .Over 200 absent voters’ permits have ! been issued at Nelson. Permits will be issued up to the day of the poll. It is expected that about 200 visitors will record their votes in Nelson on Thursday. Passengers leaving Nelson by the Pateena on Thursday will probably i have sufficient time to record their votes at Picton. All telegraph and telephone offices w*ill be kept open on Thursday nlgh£ to enable returns to be transmitted. Ai the gener-al election poll in 1914, 6485 votes were cast in the Nelson electorate. Qn this year’s roll there are 7454 names, and it is anticipated that close on 7000 votes will be recorded.
