A - meeting ‘of the' Town Council; after -a hot debate, ' decided by 18 votes to 13 to retrench 30 employees ‘ of the municipal pbwer station. r The galleries -were crowded ‘ w|th Council . employees and other workers, who hurled fhreats dnd curses "at the councillors, sang “The Red Flag” arid dispersed in-'disorder. ' ’ There was a f dramatic episode at the conclusion - of the meeting, a ‘Labourite councillor shouting, “The Council will rue the day it crossed swords with 'organised labour.” ' ‘ • JOHANNESBURG IN DARKNESS, (Rec. March 31, 10.10 a.m.) CAPETOWN; March 29. A Johaimesbugr message states ‘that the town is in ‘ complete darknes. The 'train, service has been stopped in consequence of the sudden strike at the power station of the ■ employees. • - ' _Th, Amalgamated Society of Engineers aclled out ail the members of the Society employed by municipality, thus affecting, the sanitary and water services..'-",' ■■■,- ■
(Rec. March 31, 9.5 a.m.) JOHANNESBURG, March .29. Following last night’s meeting •of employees of the municipal power station,’ it was resolved to strike. ' A strike committee was appointed, and it intimated that applications for light and power by public institutions would be considered on thoir merits. Everyis quiet. '
