FALL UNDER RAILWAY CARRIAGE.
MAN'S LUCKY ESCAPE.

PALMERSTON JN., March 28.
A chauffeur named Purton, in attempting to board the Mam Trunk express to’ -day before L stopped in order to secure a seat for a lady passenger, fell between the platform and the train, Purton had a miraculous escape from death, being caught* between the interlocking points on the ground and the compensation bar of the bogie: which projects over the wheels. When rescued he was found to be suffering from a bad scalp wound, a blackened eye, and an ugly cut under the jaw. He also lost several teeth, Despite his injuring puvtofi remained conscious,; displaying great stoicism. A depression in the" ground where* 'Purton was caught by the carriage prevented him from' being crushed to death.
A woman has lately beijn taken on the strength of the Surrey Constabulary and has been piven tbe rank of sergeant. This is the first time a woman baa had snob an appointment there.
