FIRE AT HASTINGS.
(United .Press Association.) HASTINGS, March 25. The Elms, a 12-roomed, two-storeyed residence owned and occupied by lsr Joseph Truman, was reduced to ashes 3 o'cTock this 'morning. The building was 30 years old. The flames, spread with alarming rapidity; barely Affording time for , Mi* Tmmah and* his wTf© afjd two children, in their night attire, to escape from an upstairs bedroom. The fire,, is supposed to have started by sparks from the sitting-room grate.. The furniture and other contents of the .hoijse were all destroyed. " The insurances are; On the buildings £IOOO in the New Zealand-office; furniture and effects, £6OO in the Atlas office. The owner values the buildings at £2OOO and tne furniture at £IOOO.
