810 SUMS IN’ HANDQUESTIONS FOE DECISION. Now that the war is over there will doubtless be A good deal of curiosity o n the part of the public as to the fate of the several funds held by 'Stolen* bodies which were raised for the relief, succour, and benefit of the me® helped to -win the war and there dependents, says the Dominion. Accord.-'' Log to a return prepared alter Armistice Day {November U) by the War Funds Branch of the internal Affairs Department, there was at that time a sum of £1,855,000 held by the various war-born societies in New Zealand. As tne duties of such bodies are fairly clearly defined—to help soldiets and their dependents who are actually in heed ol Mp-'-it is smt aaticipated that they will l haw too much money for the needs of the next two or three years, particularly aa it is not likely that there will be toy accretions to the fund by way of voluntary subscription now that the war .is over,, or until! the need of more money is made manifest. , v There are, however, other fends,; the fate of which will have to be determined in the near future. - The books of the War Funds Branch show that there was in November last £227,000 held on account 1 of solera* toraforte—comforts for soldiers in the (Md, camp, or hospital, the greater should be available for other purposes beneficial to the sokbe» in November a sum of £Ul£w he s# by the, Bed Cross Botfety, whose duties * ceased with the ter* Q r nation of the war, and the the New hospitals m franco and England. ’ In addition to those moneys there>- hr« smaller sums collected by' other bodj», suefi as the Navy League, who sfcjH wall have the opportunity o! disbursing them in G strict accordance with' “ the , l jpprpw# or which they were raised. ' In the' case bf the National War Funds Council a sum, approximating £35,000, subscribed/ for pOtwptic -I«S poses, will have to be in near future to some object of benefitJto the soldiers. A meeting of the codtfpß will be held shortly, at which, it ia.probable, suggestions may be pot forward as to the use these ißOneys - may-- he put to. It has been suggested tfaat tiwre.raay be overlapping here tod there nection with the work of -the repatna-; tiop boards and the war refief/SSSOCUfc tious, The : matter was mentioned >yh« terday to the local, (Mr C- Batten), who was not indioed tp think that the activities would jsdKd* “We do mot' give s6f Bsi ten. seek to prfevept -need/ it.” fie did not 'mOan'that the boim wished in «/ny way being given, where needed riot Abe .aim ol the board would-be to" help rerained soldiers %o Relief would hot be necessary. ~ « J
