' OUTBREAK IN VICTORIA. ' TWENTY-iS/BVIDN OASES' IN HOSPITAL. (Press Association—Copyright.) MELBOURNE, Jan. 23. The superintendent of the Melbourne Hospital states that cases of influenzal pneumonia were adlmitted to the institution as early as the end of November, During the past three days several simiar though more serious cases' have been admitted. There are now 27 in hospital which are undoubtedly influenza! pneumonia, apparently of an epidemic character. 'One of the patients had been engaged in unloading a boat from New Zealand. The chairman of the Board of Health said be was not prepared to admit that it was Spanish influenza or of the overseas type. So far only the pneumonia and not the influenza germ had been ■discovered.

MELBOURNE, Jan. 23 Another influenza patient died in thf Hospital. More cases are reported. Some are receiving home treatment. FOURTEEN FRESH CASES. (Rec. 10.40 a.m.) Fourteen fresh cases of influenza have been admit, ed to the hospital. The disease is obtaining greater virulence with each fresh infection. The Director of Quarantine states Cube Is nob sufficienE evTuSnce that the outbreak is Spanish influenza, to jubsify declaring the State an infected area. PRECAUTIONS IN NEW SOUTH WALES, SYDNEY, Jan. 23. The Qabinet decided in view - of the reported influenza at Melbourne to advise all inoculation depots to get into full operation all the machinery that, has been prepared. All other precautions as may be considered necessary will be taken, ISOLATION OF VICTORIA.

SYDNEY, Jan. 25. A special Cabinet meeting decided, to ask the' Federal Government to put into immediate operation if influenza has got into Victoria a Federal And State agreement adopted in November, providing for Victoria being declared! an infected State, all land traffic with the exception of goods and mails being suspended between Victoria and other 'States, interstate sea traffic being permitted only s toder the strictest - quarantine.
