MAYOR OF AUCKLANDS' PROTEST
PUBLIC HEALTH DEPARTMENT. (United Press Association.}
WELLINCTON, This Day.
iMr. Gunson (Mayor* of Auckland), commenting on the landing of the New Zealand passengers, said:—"l think the whole business is reprehensible in the extreme. From the outset we have been, actuated by only one desire ', to secure adequate protection in the interests of the Health Department of , our citizens. In my official capacity, with the backing of citizens, I have done all possible, and the action of the Government to-day in releasing passengers and luggage from a. disease-infected ship within 36 hours of their leaving the: ship, must now be left with, the citizens of this Dominion to deal with. It is a. thing unheard of in any part of the ■world where regulations are in force, and offers striking contrast to the action of the Australian authorities.
; "As for the Makura sailing for Sydney, this, in the circumstances, was the proper .course to allow. lam sure our citizens will be glad she is gone."
