OBITUARY.

I GENERAL iR. H. DAVIES. | (United Press Association.) WELLINGTON", May 14. The Acting-Prime Minister has received official confirmation of the news of the death of General JD&vie.s. Ihe message states that General Davies died ; in London 011 'Saturday last. ' iMajor-General Richard Hutton Davies, C.8.. formerly practised as a surveyor • in Taranaki. As a member of the Hawera Mounted Rifles he passed through the ranks to the position of captain. He was captain of the North Island 'Company of the First Contingent in South Africa in 1899, and altogether served in. five of those contingents that went from New Zealand to fight against the Boers, commanding the Third:, Fourth and Eighth. For his services in South Africa he was made a Companion of the Bath in 1900. In 1902 he was a brevet lieutenant-colonel, and he was promoted to the colonel on Deceniber 10th, 1906. He commanded the Auckland Military District in 1901 and was mad/C Inspector-General in December, 1906, and third military momber of the Council of Defence. Later he became a member of the - Tmperial. General Staff in London. In the first British Expeditionary Force that went to France he commanded: a brigade, and his health was adverselv affected by the hardships involved in the historic retreat from iMons.
