: Frost in February I Christchurch papers comment on the extraordinary fact that frost was experienced in parts of: the district on the nigh of February 28. \ Although it was Tight, in some places .where the ground is low-lying damage-was done to the tomatoes and "vegetable marrows. It is the first occasion for "very many years since frost b%S: been" experienced in Canterbury in February. Taken in conjunction with the extreme varieties of the weather in Wellington this summer, and the flood rains/'of the. far north, the indications are/that the season is not normal. • Eerewini Wakarua, of Waitotara, son of Iwiora Wakarua, was killed on * the French front about a month ago. ' When Herewini decided to go to the -front (say* the Stratford Post) he and his- father talked the matter over, and the latter said that; as, in the ordinary course of events, he had- fewer years to live than his son, and as the son had. just - completed; a very good education, it v would- be better for Iwiora to go. This ,-proposal, however, was not acceptably to the son, who persuaded' the father.to let him go, the father promising that if the son were killed he would fo to take his place. True to his wordwiora left for camp last week, where he'is now in training to tak e his place in-the great fight.
' /the question of the production and utilisation of alcohol for power purposes in Australia is 'being investigated •by' a special committee appointed "by the Commonwealth Advisory Council of Science and Industry, and a comprehensive and- valuable report reviewing tie whole situation, and giving the result; of investigations so far made, has l>eeri. issued:. As regards the production of power alcohol the most suitable- Taw material is the sugar molasses ikjw -wasted in Queensland. But even if'.the total annual quantity of molasses ■wasted- and used for purposes other than distillation (47,500 tons) were used for the-purpose in view it would* only be.sufficient to manufacture about three 4pd one-eighth million gallons of alcolioli --"whereas the annual petrol requirements of Queensland alone are nearly a half million gallons. Moreover, .owing to freight charges and' labour costs it does not seem feasible to isgardjinolasses in some of the outlying northern parts of Queensland as a profitable-; source of liquid 'uel for use in paris : bf Australia far distant from that State. TTor these reasons it is necessary, to consider whetheT some other, profitable source of supply cannot be foiin<t.':
