DISTRICT NEWS.

RICHMOND, BOROUGH COUNCIL, The Richmond Borough Council meeting was held in the Chambers on Tuesdav, 26th February. Present: The Mayor (Mr W. E. Wilke-), Crs. Thorn, Batt, Ingram, Cross, and Hart. Accounts amounting to £47 17s 5d (general account) were passed for payment.

Correspondence was dealt with as fol lows :

From Mr O. R. Harley, statins that he would leave the repairing of the culvert in the hands of the Council.—Letter received.

Resolved that the foreman be instructed to proceed with repairing the culvert at the White Hart Hotel. From the Manawatu County Council pointing out the amount of motor traffic that is thrown upon the roads owing to the Government not running special trains to race meetings, and asking this Council's support to petition the member for the district for the resumption of specials. —Letter received, and no action taken. From the British Distillate Co., re distillation of coal tar.—'Letter to be filed for reference.

The foreman reported that owing to the bad weather there had not been much gravel carted. The tarring of the footpaths and water tables had been commenced. The gravel on the roads- had been raked several times. A new plank has been put in the culvert in Cemetery road. The water has been laid on ns instructed in Oxford-street. On visiting the Butter Factory it was found that there was about 30 yards of pipes with broken ioints, and the trench is filled in with stones and clinkers. It empties into a tank 12ftx6ft and 3ft 6in depth. The water pipe leading to'-.the adjoining property goes through the factory hot water tank with a curled pipe -nd ieturns again to the sausage hou&e. The electric globes ordered are to hand. During the last fortnight glotcs have been replaced on Gladetone-road, Oxford-street, and Queen-street, all of which are 25 candle-power, and are placed on the table for inspection. The reservoir has overflowed since the ram, and on the 23rd was down 3in from the overflow. —Resolved that the report oe received. _ It having come under.,, the •voaivls notice that some person has been s«ibstituting the electric lamps on + he Boro.un streets of 50 and 60 candle-power for lamps of 20 and 25 c.P.—lt was decided that the matter be placed in the hands of the police. The Mayor, on behalf of the Works Committee, reoorted on the state of the bridge in Salisbury-road, and recommended that a new decking of black birch be put on, and that the top be covered with gravel.—Resolved that this be done.—Resolved that the report be adopted. The Works Committee reported on Hill-street, and recommended that 1.6 to 2ft be taken off the rise on Clifton s frontage, the bank on eastern side be straightened, and 3 to 4ft be the spoil used to fill in the hollow about a chain past the bridge; that Bright'a Cutting be widened by 4ft the spoil to be used to fill up the hollows where the concrete pipes are to be put; that property owners be notified to clear noxious weeds in view of the proposed, improvements. All water table require cleaning out and the street should be metalled and patched with beach gravel from end to end. The culvert leading to Mr Higgs' property is not large enoush in times of heavy ram, and should be replaced with larger pipes or a bridge.—Resolved that tenders be called for the work in Hill-street; that consideration of the specifications for this work be left, vie the hands of the Works Committee; that property owners in Hill-street be given notice to clear their frontages of noxious weeds without delay before the improvements caw: be commenced; that a concrete wall be placed in the creek at Higg's gate ; that one man be employed for one day. to prospect the gravel reserve in Champion road ; that the Works Committee s recommendation re patching and metalling in Hill-street be gone on with. From T. B. Huffam re water trough. From Messrs Rout and Milner, forwarding plan and width of Oxford-st.— Resolved, that this Council approve o; the width of Oxford-street (40ft), and that the Borough Seal be attached . From Mrs Belch, complaining of the cutter overflowing in front of her residence.—Resolved that the complaint be attended to. .. ■ , ,~. From the Westnort Council re holding a Conference to make representations to the proper authorities to have the Springs equipped for the treatment of sufferere.-Re£>lved that this Council will support any movement for the improvement of the Springs. Resolved:—That the Town Clerk advertise that all rates not paid by .the 31st March will be sued for; that the Works Committee have the ditoh in Water-street cleaned out as soon as labour is available ; that the foreman interview Mr Hunter and inquire if the Council can obtain possession of the roller owned bv the Cricket Club; that the owner of property on the corner of Dorset-street and Cambridge-street be requested to lower his hedge, it being daneeroiM to traffic at " its present height; that the lessee of property at the corner of McShane's road ana Lower Queen-street be requested to cut, his hedge to obviate the danger to tralfic at this corner.
