MOUTERE HILL ROAD.
(To the Editor.)
Sir,—As 'a. frequent user of the Moutere Hill road, I am surprised to see that the Waimea- County Council are still employing the traction engine for hauling gravel. Surely the Councillors, after the experience they had, or the public had, of the terrible damage it did to the Redwood's Valley and Moutere Hill -road previously and also to the Stoke road, which road is now probably the roughest piece of main road between here and Dunedin, through the damage done by the County traction engine. Before this new campaign of gravelling the Moutere Hill road, on the Moutere side, the town side was about as perfect for traffic as a gravelled hill Toad could be, but now where the road, both foundation and metal, are not pushed out into the wa-ter-tables, it is worked up into a ridge, in the centre. I can assure the travelling public that they are in for a very bad time before long on the hills, the summer .coming on it will be all dust, and the winter following it will be all mud and gutters, if something is not done quickly to _ stay the damage that is being done at the present time. It is ridiculous to see a great 12-ton engine rolling along the road drawing one truck containing probably three yards of metal. It is not very encouraging to* a Stoke ratepayer tp see a very large proportion of his rate£ being wasted - in this fashion, especially on a road that he has very little concern in, when the load through his own district is in such «i disgraceful state and a by-word to all who travel on it.—l am, etc.. ALFRED A. ALLPORT.
