Land Fund Thirds £2 ISs od. ENGINEER'S -REPORT. The Engineer (Mr G. S. Whiteside) reported : Maitai Riding.— Arrangements have been made for the lengthening of the large concrete culvert at the sliarp turn in road near O'Beirne's. Wakapuaka. Routine maintenance work has- been carried out on the road from Rai Saddle to Nelson. Wai-iti Riding.—A start has been made with the work of wiaening the foot bridge over the AVai-iti river at Quail Valley to take motor traffic. The shortage of suitable workmen for the job has delayed the work. A bridge in Pigeon Valley near Palmer's has had three new stringers 30 feet long placed under the traffic way; also most of the deck planks have had to be renewed on account of the old timbers being so much decayed. The bridge at A. Gibb's Church Valley, Wakefield, has been completed with the road thereto. The No. 1' road machine having completed the Wai-iti Valley road is at work on Spooner's Range and at 8-S Valley next. Does the Council purpose continuing this machine at work during the next few months? Motupiko Riding— River protection work is being done in Norris' Gully : also river protection work along the Motueka River at Kohatu. Metal patching has been carried out in Dovedale and the Motupiko River road also metal patching on the Kohatu—Golden Downs Road:

W T angapeka Riding—As to the proposed division of the road at the junction of Orinoco and Rosedale roads through the Hills to avoid the long splash. On investigation ot the ground leads me to believe that a traffic bridge ■would cost less than deviating the road. The deviation would necessitate a small bridge, compensation for land required, fencing and severance. As to the settlers stock bridge near the Big Pokororo which the Council has been asked to assist in the building. The proposed structure does not appear to me to be satisfactory for the situation. A stringer or log bridge is not suitable for the locality and river. If the water way is curtailed'• or throttled, it will induce a scour in the river, wnich will take away the bank and road. A light suspension stock bridge "would be built for less money and be sure satisfactory.

•Motueka Riding—A small concrete bridge has been newly built over the stream near Beatson's on the Ngatimoti —Fangatotara road. Metal patching has been carried out on the Motueka river road- The approaches to the new bridge Valley has been formed and metalled Work is progressing on the Motueka—lliwaka bridge. An occasionay flood in the river has relanded the work.

Aloutere Riding—The road in the Seaton "Valley ha sheen formed and metalled by the Bronte Land Syndicate as required by the County Council. The traction engine is at work metalling on the Mbutere Hills. General woi - k has been carried out throughout the riding. It w*as resolved on the motion of the Chairman, and seconded by Cr. Tunm cliffe that, provided the settlers interested contribute £2O towards the cost of the work-the Council will put in a culvert to abate the floodwater nuisance at Brightwater. It was resolved on the motion of the Chairman, esconded by Cr. Drummond, that it is not advisable to erect a stock bridge, across the Pokororo river, and the Council declines to contribute towards the work.

It was resolved that the Moutere Amalgamated Fruit Lands Co. be notified that they are not required to carry out any further work on the Seaton Valley road. The report was adopted.

APPOINTMENT OF OVERSEER. The Council then further considered the applications for th'e position of Overseer, three names having been left over from the last meeting for consideration. After three ballots the choice fell upon Mr Michael Fennell, -jf'Westport. CORRESPONDENCE. Letters were dealt with as follows: From the Minister of Finance, re War Loan, thanking the Chairman for the pai-t taken in bringing about such a splendid result. From the Chief Telegraph Engineer, re pi'Oposal to establish direct telephone communication between Reefton and Nelson, stating that to provide a prac--1 ticable service would be a fairly costly undertaking ,and that estimates were being prepared for submission to the Postmaster-General.
