ANNUAL MEETING.

The annual meeting of the Nelson Society for the Prevention of Cruelity to ■Animals was held in the Mayor's room yesterday afternoon, Bishop Mules - aiules presided. The Inspector [Mr H. F. West) reported that eleven complaints had been received during the year, viz: Hltreatment of horses 6, dogs 2, cattle 2, and L None of the complaints except one in regard to the ill-treatment of a horse "was serious, and in this case the complaint was received too late to take action. Thanks were tendered the police for assistance ungrudgingly rrhe audited balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £62 2s sd. •Mr West tendered his resignation as honorary secretary. On the motion of Bishop Sadlier, seconded by Mr H. B. Walker, Mr H. Saunders was appointed to the position. ** On the motion of Mrs 'Reading, a very hearty vote of thanks, was accorded Air West for acting as honorary secretly of the society for the past four years. Members said it was owing to Mr West's untiring efforts that the society had been kept together. The election of officers was postponed until a future meeting, the pre sent officers to hold office until their successors are elected. It was decided to revise the list of members and to institute a campaign - to obtain new members. Miss Gibbs was appointed authorised collector of subscriptions. Mrs Beading stated that she had •rganised a Band of Mercy with the object of teaching children kindness to -animals, and already there was a membership of over 200. Bishop Sadlier undertook to obtain .• by next meeting particulars of the Blue CVoss Hospital for New Zealand horses. It was stated that last year the society •ontributed £5 towards the Blue Cross , Hospital. He suggested that an appeal might be- made to the public for funds. A suggestion was made that an - ■ "Animal Sunday" might be held at the churches, when appropiate sermons might be preached. This matter was left until a future meeting.
