DESPERATE AUSTRIAN EFFORTS AT VODICE
THE SUCCESS. (Australian and N.Z Cable Association.) LONDON, May 21.The Daily Chronicle's correspondent at. Italian headquarters, writing on Sunday, says the'battie on the Upper Isortao for the range of heights mastering the left 'bank'- continues to develop with mechanical precision. The Austrians in the afternoon made a desperate attempt to retake the last ground at Vqdice. Wave after wave rolled, forward upon the hastily improvised Italian trenfches built on the old Austrian line, but every wave was broken ;and when the attack was oyer groups of Austrian dead were lying everywhere in No Man J s_Land. The fighting, continued all night, and at dawn Vodice'was captured., THE AUSTRIAN CASUALTIES. f Australian.and N.Z Cab.. Asuociati"RXSiVD3, May 20. - The Messagerd'states that there were 20,00 Austrian casualties in the first four davs of the Italian offensive.
