GERMANS COUNTER-ATTACKING AT GAVRELLE BRITISH LOSE AND GAIN* GROUND. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) and Renter.) LONDON, May 17. Sir Douglas Haig reports:—After a heavy bombardment on both of the Scarpe, the enemy launched a powerful counter-attack early this morning between Gavrelle and the rivei*, and pressed forward under the destructive fire of our artillery and machine guns. The enemy for a short period, by weight of numbers, forced us back from our forward positions, but our immediate counter-attack regained all the ground, inflicting exceptionally heavy losses. A number of prisoners were taken. We made progress Hindenburg line north-eastward of Bullecourt We repulsed a raid south-eastward of Ypres.
