About 6 o'clock last evening, ENliss iTbaby Saunders was leaving the Empire Theatre, -when she observed smoke issu-in-.from the kitchen of the refreshment l'bora in the front portion of the s'building. : She gave the alarm and Mr Saunders, who is licensee of the Exchange Hotel,; next door, secured a iyrmene fire ■ extinguisner,. and the effects of this kept, fire in check until the arrival of the Eire Brigade. Members of the Brigade 1 were on the scene in quick • time, and, cutting away the inside wall', were able to get at the seat of the fire,.which was soon extinguished.' liittle damage, fortunately, was done, and the pictures were shown as usual in the evening.
It appears that yesterday afternoon syrup for soda- fountain was being made on a'gas stove, and the gas being inadvertently left burning the _ syrup had overflowed from a pan and ignited. The heat caused' the joint of the pipe siupplvi<vr the stove to .leak, and although the wails are protected by an asbestos sheet the fire got behind the lining. ; RESIDENCE AT IvOREREi i DESTROYED. ' On Sundav morning a residence at Korere owned by Mr W. D. Thompson and occupied .bv 'Mr Campbell, was total v destroyed'by fire.. The bull: in-: was inured' with the Alliance office for £450.
