CHARGE OF DISLOYAL UTTERANCE
A REMAND GRANTED
Before Mr J. S. Evans, &.M., at vhe -magistrate's Court this morning a man named Ernest Henricks, aged 29, of Redwood's VaLley, labourer, was charged that on 10th August, 1916, at Upper Moutere, he did "puiblish" within the meaning of clause 4 of the War Regulations dated) L9th July, 1915, under the War Regulations Act of 1914, certain statements indicating disloyalty in respect ■to the present war, inter alia, (1) You are a b fool to go to fight for your King. and country. (2) The cruelty to the women and children iu Belgium was not done iby Germans, 'but by the mongrels of the Allied forces; which said statements were published to James Cyril Harvey;, Maurice Se.pton Harvey, ami Williami Beiisemaiui, of Upper Moutere. •Sergt.. .Barrett applied for a remand, as two witnesses had to come from Feabherston Camp. Mr W. V. Rout, who appeared for accused, applied' for bail'. Sergt. 'Barrett said <t)he man had cleared out previously, and had been apparently -returning to the Moutere. He was a single man without dependents, and bail, he thought, should be substantial. Mr Rout, in reference to Sergeant Barrett's statement. suggested that conditions be fixed such as reporting to the police, say, twice a day. The Magistrate, in granting a remand to 11th September, fixed 'bait in self at £IOO and one at £IOO, or two at £SO.
