FIGHTING ON THE TIGRIS
HIGH COM.MISSIONER'S- REPORT. The High Commissioner reports:— London, Jan. 10. '4.55. p.m. ■ Mr Chamberlain, in the House of Commons; announced that heavy, fighting had occurred on both banks of the a.igris on Friday. Two oi the enemy guns and 700 prisoners .were taken by,the British. The enemy was in full Tetreat on Sunday, and the British were pursuing him. A MOST IMPORTANT VICTORY. London; Jan. 11. The victory is regarded as most important. The principal fighting took place on the occupied Tigris bank three miles below Sheik ah Shad, the Kemballi column, which was adjacent, also operating against the enemy. On the 9th inst. Colonel Aylmer reported, "The enemy are retreating. I am -pursuing. Heavy rain hinders the pursuit." The enemy have fallen back on Orah. TURKISH CONCENTRATIONS. REPORTED ABANDONMENT OF EGYPTIAN EXPEDITION. ROME. Jan. 11. It is believed that the Mesopotamia expedition, which the Turks are largely reinforcing, is replacing that against Egypt, which the Germans now consider premature.
