THEFTS ON A STEAMER
(UNTfitn PaESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON. Dec. 30. While the steam,.* •Corinthic was lying at the King's Wharf last night, her surgery was broken open, valuable instruments stolen, and the room itscdf set afire. Smoke from the surgery attracted attention, and led to the discovery of the crime. Prompt measures were taken," and the fire was suppressed, the damage done to the room arid fittings being slight. Last night- apparently a couple of the seamen got into the surgery through a, porthole. Practically everythingr of value was removed, and secreted in boats and other places throughout the ship. All of .it was recovered, to-day, except a- bottle of brandy. While the men were* drinking and smoking,. apparently matches wei'e dropped, igniting cotton wool and other inflammable material, which smouldered, after the men's departure, and finally blazed up, scorching and charring the fittings. When the two men stepped ashore at 7 o'clock this morning they walked, into the arms of waiting detectives. It appears that petty thieving was.rife on the vessel all the way out from. England.
