SUGGESTED NATIONALISATION OF ROADS
(United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Replying to-day to a deputation representing various intei'ested local bodies, which requested assistance for the upkeep- and improvement of the Manawatu Gorge road, Mr Eraser, Minister of Public Works, said that the nationalisation of roads could ndt be done in one case and not in another. If motorists were to run in competition with railways, they must pay for it. But everyone who wanted motor roads made a howl when the suggestion to tax them was put forward. It was impossible to construct motor roads at present. He would like to help; but he thought those who used the roads most should pay for them.
