TOWN SCHOOLS COMMITTEE
MONTHLY MEETING. "A meeting of ithe" Town Schools Committee" was held last evening in the Education Board Rooms. --.There were present:-ißev. J. H. MacKenzie (chairman), Messrs Easdale, BoyesV ; Winn, McCondhie, ■ Stringer, Treacher, Mesdames Buchanan and Hill. Mr F. G. Gibbs, headmaster of the Boys' 'Central, reported 564 names on the Toll with an average attendance of .524. '.-■■ ■■•!-••■•■■-"-■ ' ■■'<■ • :; -" ?f ■": • - Mr F> V. Knapp, headmaster- of the Girls' Central "School, reported 677 names on the' Toll and an average attendance of 608. '! " L An Application re cutting down'-trees that • were shading; the Brook' street School was the sbject of some dis-. cussion* ■.-•• y- ■''"',' -.-It:'was moved and carried that a com-mittee••-•be"iappointed: with power to act. " - Concerning 'the framing of' three' sets of views for the Boys' Central - School, the same committee'was requested to report at the-next meeting. ! Regarding the overcrowding at Brookstreet School, mentioned in Mr Gibbs's report, it : was resolved that the report be forwarded to the -Education Board with a strong reconlendation that it receive immediate attention. Mr Bpyes moved "v that a, deputation from the Committee wait on the Board at its next meeting in,regard, to this matter.—Carried.. . -■ -On-Mr B.oyes's motion, an application re the leveling of ground at me Girls' Central School was referred to the Edu- - cation, Board. ' -The resignation of Miss Hoodythird assistant at the School, who has been appointed to the Rockville School, .was received. *' It was resolved that a letter be sent to Miss Hood conveying the thanks of the 'Committee, for ,her good- services rendered, and wishing her every .success in her .-new positioni ;: - - 'I twas; resolved that application be made to the Education hr accordance with clause 124'0f the Education Act, to frame f egulatiofts '.regarding attendance at the Technical "School. Accounts amounting to £l2 13s were passed' *dr payment.' 'Mr Boys moved that' the Chairman apply to the Education Board for a half holiday for" the Town Schools on June 23rd,. in -order that the children might attend- the Red Cross entertainment at the Boys' College.—Carried. The Chairman moved the two 'following resolutions : —(1) That the Committee make application to the Governmentthrough Mr Thompson, '*° J?, 0 * 1 Lands Commissioner, to vest in the Nelson Education Board'as an addition tto the playground of the Girls' School all tHat piece of land' situated in Col-lin«wood-street, Nelson, which was the lower portion of the 'Old Cemetery, but which some time ago was resumed by the Government as a public reserve. The Government to be informed, that the Town Council, which has control of , the Cemetery, has granted .permission I for the use by the children ot the said part 'provided the graves' are properly protected; (2) That the Committee apply to'the City Council to be, allowed_to mak& application to the Minister of Internal Affairs -for' leave to remove the remains and monuments of those interred in the Old Cemetery, Colling-wood-street, tp the New Cemetery.
