BRIDGE IN TRAFALGAR-STREET.

/Hie following report was submitted at last night's Council meeting by a deputation from the Council ■ wliicli waited on Mr Thomas Cawthron

On Thursday, the 10th day <of Junej 1915, the Mayor, Cr Piper and tho Town Clerk, met Mr Thomas 'Cawthron at the Council Chambers- and explained to 'him that the delay in" tho completion of the survey of the Britannia. Heights road was caused by tho difficulty in arranging with tho Railway authorities regarding tho road crossing the lino at Bishopdale. The Town Clerk has written to the District Railway Engineer at Greymouth explaining to him the position, and it is expected the difficulty will be got over shortly. At the meeting Mr Cawthroni discussed the building of a bridge over the Maitai in Trafalgar-street. Ho stated that if a suitable plan for a cart bridge were submitted to him he would consider the erection of it. We understood that if he were satisfied, with tho plan and if ho found the bridge could be erected at a reasonable cost ho would erect it. . Mr Cawthron mentioned that he thought the bridge should be a flat bridge: of ferro-concrete, that it should be 42 feet wide over all with Bft paths on etach side; and a c4ft cartway, and bo provided with la,mps oh each, sicta and on the central piers. Thfti thft bridge should be of a substantia lasting nature, not too ornamental,, but not irieari looking, and, that it be erected in the middle of tne strefet. He. would like something tha,t would ;be a fitting concomitant to. (the Church ' recommen dthat steps 'be to obtain a plan of a bridge that wul meet with Mr Cawthron's views. 1 The report was adopted. 1 _ It was resolved, on the anotioriof Gr ■Moffatt, seconded by Cr AVebley, that the City Engineer be requested to again submit his plans for a bridge to Mr Cawthron.
