What improbably .the'biggest haul of opium ever made in New Zealand was erfected by the Auckland Customs offi cials when the steamer Invertay arrived from New York to-day. It is stated that, although spscial 'vigilance was exercised on, the arrival of the vessel owing to the fact that she had 19 Chinamen -working below in the engine-room there was nothing to cause suspicion on a preliminary examination being made. Subsequently the Customs, officers tore •up the planking of the coal ibunkers and found a large, quantity- of opium stowed ; away. Altogether 437 tins were brought) out, and it is* estimated that the value cf the seizure is at least £IOOO.
