PRICE OF BUTTER

■ QUESTION OF EXPORT. COMMISSION RECOMMENDS PROHIBITION.- - " GOVERNMENT WILL TAKE ACTION " v BKS-:« *3BOCIATIOK ' WELLINGTON, This Day. \ Mr Massey 'informed a "Post" reporter that he had just received the report of ' the Food Commission on the price of butter. The Commission recirmend that while the- present stocks, with the quantity ' " x likely to be produced in the next two months, will 'be sufficient for our requirements, there will be a shortage it further exportstions to any extent are allowed. The Commission is of opinion that further- exportation to Australia should for the-present bo prohibited, except with the consent of the Government, and that such consent should be withheld unless the Government is satisfied that, sufficient for the norma Ire--quirements of the Dominion is retained in the country. Mr Masaey added that in accordance with the recommendation of the Com- ' mission; the Government will retain control of-the.export of butter for the winter months, and will to see shat sufficient- is retained in New Zealand for our own requirements, and that a reasonable price is charged, as compared with "the. price charged in other countries. He also stated that information had reached him that a slup- - mont of some 6000 or 7000 boxes of butter was being returned from.England to New Zealand,, the consignees evidently realising thaf at the ruling price » would pay them better to send it back San to unload at England. The real trouble was -4be searcity in Australia, and the high price obtainable there. Besides that, many New Zealand- factories which, fonr-erly made butter were now makins cheese, it paid them dm- , tar to do so. ■■ cThe Imperial Government 'was asking for,:far more cheese'for the nse of thl 'troops than New Zealand <?ould supply.
