A LESSON AT AUCKLAND

AUCKLAND, May 6. In, the Magistrate's Court, a,widow named -Isabella Morpeth was charged, with sending a telegram addressed .to a resident of Fxaserton, Hawkes Bay contrary, to war regulations. Lieut-Uoi-onel Hume, Officer Commanding the Military District, said-the case was brought to stop the prevalent and .depractice of circulating incorrect reports of casualties amongst our troops. The telegram put in by the defendant on Fridav read: "Commander Plucn« and 700 Kew Zealanders killed. lhe message was stopped by the Censor Defendant pleaded not .tmnty and stated that she had heard the news irom a gentleman in the street, whose address lhe did hot know. This man heard it 'from another man, who said he saw it on the "Herald" board. Mr Frazer," S.M., said : defendant s explanation bore the impress of truth, but She- was most indiscreet. ws an old lady a nominal fine of £1 and costs would -be imposed. The Magistrate remarked that perhaps it would be a lesson to people' circulating such Tumours to learn that the maximum-fine for the offence is £IOO.
